Attending MYC as a First Year:

Mark's story

Coming from a Christian background, I have been to many different church camps; they all ended up in the same way, an intense emotional experience followed by a spiritual high and ending with reverting back to the same old me.

The speaker, John North, was continuously raved about by all the 2nd years, and so my expectations were very high however John North still exceeded them. God taught me through him that we are sent. Meaning that God sent us into the families that we have, the universities we study at, our friendships, etc. and that God has given us a responsibility to glorify him in all these situations and positions he sent us to.

From that message I began to think about my friends at school. Now, we’ve never ever had a serious conversation about anything, and hence anything spiritual would be the last thing on my mind when I think about them. That message really convicted me, though, and I began to think about the guys in my group and how I could minister to them and actually be a Christian instead of one of the world.

Funnily enough, that night I met one of their sisters at the camp. It was surreal seeing as though they come from a hardcore Buddhist family. So I decided to plan- I was up all night thinking about ways to go about it when I got home from MYC, little did I know that God had something else in store.

The next day, we had a practical exercise seeking to share Jesus with people. I was put into the social media group.  I was surfing the internet seeing where I could post or bring up a spiritual conversation, until I had an idea to pop on my Skype. First name that popped up was my friend’s name, whose sister was at MYC. I started to talk to him and I got to share the gospel with him, my first time, and although he rejected it, the mere fact that we talked about spiritual things was massive for me.

This is just one of the many things that have come out of my attendance at MYC as a first year and I would encourage you to go as well if you want to see God grow you in evangelism, or any other aspect of your walk with Him.

Mark is a student at Monash Clayton, studying Commerce and Business Information Systems.
